What students do on holidays
On Presidents Day weekend, I got a few calls from friends needing some guidance with programming, and I was more than happy to help. Besides finding it fun, it's pretty convenient to help over the internet -- that is, not having to shower or get out of my PJ's. (You think I'm kidding?!?!)
Over the weekend, a couple and I decided to meet up on Monday (a holiday) to do some programming. My friend Chao drove all the way down from San Francisco to meet up with me and Jeremy at a local donut shop. Before long, we got a call from a couple other friends who were also doing programming, and so they came down from San Mateo to join us.

It wasn't until after a few hours that it hit me -- these guys are all committed to doing really well in programming. They aren't just wanting to get the assignment done and pull off an 'A', either. They figure out why things worked the way they do and what the best way to do it is.
Among us engineering students, this is pretty typical behavior. What sets these guys apart, though, is they push it to the limit every single chance they get. They go out of their way on holidays to do so! (Getting to Redwood City is not always so easy). That really impresses me.

(Jeremy thinking of the best way to solve the "100 lockers" problem ... hmmm ... that donut down there looks good)
Every week I meet with students who are looking to do better in math and computer science. What never ceases to amaze me, however, is how so many students from CaƱada College go the extra mile to not just complete assignments, but to gain the deepest possible understand of the material.
Kudos.

(To top things off, it actually started to hail!)
